What I’ve been reading, Winter & Spring 2011
ByHave you had a busy first quarter of 2011? I know I have. It seems that time has flown between January 1 and today. But regardless of how busy I am, I make time for personal growth. And one of the best ways to spark new growth in myself is reading.
Here are some of the books that I’ve read in the past few months. As usual, I found and filed quotes and stories according to my system. I hope that in one or more of them you will find fuel for your own personal growth this spring and summer.
(If you can’t see the bookshelf below, click here to view my list.)
- Short Trip to the Edge by Scott Cairns
- Eyewitness to Power by David Gergen
- The Truth about… by James M. Kouzes,…

Dear Mr. Maxwell: Thank you for the reading list recommendations. First quarter went “whoosh” for me as well but now that my annual report and income tax projects are completed, it’s full speed ahead into the second quarter. I’ve been receiving Maxwell moments and feel as though I know you a little bit. Your books were recommended to me by Mr. Bob Goshen, who has been coaching me online and I plan to read them as soon as I can. Any plans to speak in Punta Gorda, Florida? (It’s Happening on the Harbor) If so, you might like to browse: http://www.puntagorda-chamber.com. As a member, Dreamrider has a weekly posting on this site under Friday Facts and the Chamber has many interesting and worthwhile events planned. Look forward to more personal development and success in the future. Sincerely, Louise Rabin, Dreamrider International LLC.
John, thanks for the reading list. I’ve been looking forward to your updated list. From last Fall’s list, I loved reading Aspire by Kevin Hall, the background of the words gave me an even greater appreciation for the power of communication in leadership. I still chew on the meaning of the word “Guru” — Gu = Darkness, Ru = Light, a guru is one who leads people out of darkness into the light. So is a leader. So is Jesus. Richard Stengel’s book on Mandela’s Way gave a great portrait of building one’s strength to endure, to lead, to see and pursue the big picture no matter the cost or the time involved.
From this list I greatly enjoyed David Gergen’s book. He did a great job of pulling out strengths and weaknesses about each president’s leadership style. He did with grace and civility, and practical application for our own leadership.
I also read Bill Hybels, The Power of a Whisper. He helped clean out my ears and make me more sensitive to hearing those promptings from God in leadership and living.
I am looking forward to reading The Truth about Leadership and the book on Bonhoeffer as well.
Thanks again for sharing your reading list and realizing how much that adds value to our leadership. So what are you going to read this summer?
Dear John
